Presentation Introduction: JFX Gay Street Underpass Lighting Design

In response to the City’s call for a brighter, safer, and more creative infrastructure beneath the JFX at Gay Street, RAUNJIBA CREATIVE has developed a series of lighting and design concepts intended to transform this underpass into a welcoming, visually engaging gateway into Downtown Baltimore.
The initial request focused on illuminating the underpass with ultraviolet blue or programmable RGB lighting to create a consistent color wash beneath the structure. Following a site evaluation, we have prepared additional design option that achieve this goal while maintaining traffic safety, visibility, and durability.
We recommend including four floral shade elements to columns running parallel to Gay Street to complete the visual rhythm of the installation. and supplemental color wash lighting to improve brightness, depth, and pedestrian experience on the adjcent sidewalk.
The lighting fixtures proposed for testing are highway-rated, architectural-grade luminaires with precise color control and remote programming, selected to deliver a vivid, uniform wash without impacting traffic flow or public safety.
Together, these elements create a cohesive strategy to elevate the JFX Gay Street underpass into a dynamic, illuminated civic gateway.

The lighting fixtures selected for testing are commercial-grade, architectural luminaires specifically designed for use in highway, bridge, and civic infrastructure environments. Unlike decorative or consumer lighting, these fixtures are engineered to withstand continuous outdoor exposure, vibration, and urban conditions while delivering precise, controllable illumination.
Key characteristics include:
-
High-output LED architectural flood fixtures capable of producing a uniform, saturated color wash across large structural surfaces
-
Full RGBW color-changing capability, allowing for ultraviolet blue illumination as well as programmable color variations when desired
-
Remote control and scheduling features, enabling color adjustment, dimming, and timed operation without on-site intervention
-
Highway-rated, weather-sealed housings suitable for permanent installation beneath elevated roadways
-
Controlled beam optics designed to illuminate structural elements and pedestrian areas without causing glare, distraction, or interference with traffic flow
-
Long-life, energy-efficient LED technology, minimizing maintenance requirements and operational costs over time
These fixtures have been selected to balance visual impact, public safety, durability, and long-term reliability, ensuring the lighting system meets both aesthetic goals and the performance standards required for transportation infrastructure.
